Oil Cleansing, Acne, Cleansing, Oil Cleansing for acne

Did I just read that right? Oil cleansing? On my face? Hell no........ these were my exact thoughts when I first saw the post on Pinterest... and I just casually carried on scrolling without pinning that post.... To make a long story a little shorter, I started going through an all natural, organic, chemical free stage and boy was I glad I did.

I started using sugar scrubs, way to much baking soda, sulphate free shampoos and conditioners.... and finally when it came to my cleansing routine.... i started searching the internet for organic ways to cleanse my skin without scorching it with harmful chemicals....

So my research mission began......

The first thing we get taught from a young age as soon as we start developing acne is to dry our skin out, without realising that worst thing that you can ever do to your skin....

Here is why,

As soon as the skin starts drying out your skin barrier function gets injured causing inflammation and breakouts.  A weakened skin barrier can cause bacteria and chemicals from cleansers to penetrate the skin causing more damage.

How Oil Cleansing works.

Let me first say, I am no expert at chemistry, I am simply sharing beauty information that I have personally tried.

The basic principle of oil cleansing is that like dissolves like....

"Chemists say that 'like dissolves like,' meaning that substances with similar chemical characteristics will dissolve in each other. Specifically, polar solvents tend to dissolve polar solutes, and non-polar solvents tend to dissolve non-polar solutes, while non-polar and polar substances are Immiscible"

So, basically you are dissolving the dirty oils on your skin with clean natural oils.

Please take notice - that once you start oil cleansing your face might breakout for one to two weeks as a result of impurities surfacing, but thereafter you should have acne free glowing skin.

What you will need....

  • Your Oil Mixture - Get recipes for different skin types here The Oil Cleansing Method
  • Hot Water
  • Face Towels- If you are going to cleanse your face everyday I would recommend buying at least 5 face towels to use each day.
*Very Important - you have to wash your face cloth in the laundry after using it.

STEP 1

Make your oil mixture.

STEP 2

Open the hot water tap and let it run.

STEP 3

Massage your entire face with the oil for at least 2 minutes (nothing has ever removed mascara this well)

STEP 4

Soak your face towel in the hot water and wring it out.

STEP 5

Fold the face towel in half and apply the hot towel to your face until it has cooled down.

STEP 6

Repeat Step 4 and 5.

I personally do oil cleansing 5 times a week and only at night, during the day I still use my sunscreen moisturiser.

Here is my recipe.

10% Castor Oil
50% High Linoleic Sunflower Oil
40% Grapeseed Oil
5 drops Lavender Oil

TIPS

If your face feels too dry you can add less castor oil to your recipe.
If your face feels too oily you can add more castor oil to your recipe.
